What it's like to live here
Los Alamitos became a city in March 1960. A large share of its land is the Joint Forces Training Base, which also hosts the USA Water Polo National Aquatic Center, so the residential neighborhoods are compact and quiet compared with the city's footprint.
Two things often confuse newcomers. Rossmoor, right next door, is not part of the city: it is unincorporated and simply shares the Los Alamitos mailing address and ZIP code 90720. And the Los Alamitos Race Course has a Los Alamitos address but sits in neighboring Cypress.
Homes you'll find
Expect a mix of single-family neighborhoods along with townhomes and condos, which is one reason the city's median sits below Rossmoor's. Within the $1.5M to $4M range, buyers are usually looking at larger or updated single-family homes; inventory in that band is limited, so it pays to watch new listings closely.
Schools
The city is served by the Los Alamitos Unified School District. School assignment depends on the exact address, not the ZIP code, so confirm any home's assigned schools directly with the district before you make an offer.
