Before closing
Schedule the final walk-through
Confirm wire instructions by phone with escrow, never by email alone
Set up homeowners insurance to start on closing day
Book movers or a truck
Transfer or start utilities: electric, gas, water, trash, internet
Moving day
Change the locks and garage codes
Find the main water shut-off and electrical panel
Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors
Photograph meter readings
First month
File your change of address with USPS
Update your address with the DMV within 10 days
Watch for the supplemental property tax bill
Look into the homeowners' property tax exemption with the County Assessor
Register with the school district if you have children
Save your closing documents somewhere safe
